What the Media is Saying About AARP

“Most people join AARP for their hotel and motel discounts. Most people have no idea about their political agenda being as liberal as it is.” Terry Scanlon, President, Capitol Research Center

“But the AARP is talking out of both sides of its mouth. It says stock and bond investing is like playing a slot machine at the same time it promotes stock and bond investing by selling 38 mutual funds to its members and taking a cut from each sale.” James K. Glassman, Tech Central Station

“AARP’s not-so-hidden big-government agenda is to ensure those promises [to seniors, such as Social Security] are kept largely by raising taxes . . .” Wall Street Journal Editorial

“AARP’s role in the Social Security debate has focused new attention on the hundreds of millions of dollars the group makes by endorsing and co-branding health insurance, financial products, and travel services that are sold to its members. Some of those products suffer from lackluster performance, particularly the mutual funds it co-brands with Scudder Investments, a unit of Deutsche Bank.” Business Week Magazine

What Seniors Are Saying About AARP

“AARP’s official position is there is no ‘crisis’ in Social Security, that only small changes are needed to keep it financially sound. Its website article is entitled, ‘Don’t Mess With Success.’ It asserts, ‘there is no crisis and that moderate adjustments can keep the system sound. Anyone with a college degree, a hand-held calculator, and a demographic chart of the US population knows the position of AARP is false. “ John Armor, a 12-year AARP member.

“I never saw AARP do anything that would hurt their business.” Alan Simpson (R-WY) former United States Senator

Critical Senior Issues AARP Refuses To Endorse

Repeal of the tax on Social Security. This tax actually levies a double-tax on up to 50% of earnings by a senior. AARP supported the Clinton tax plan and is silent now on its repeal.

Elimination of the Death Tax. The so-called Estate Tax unfairly penalizes the families of seniors by imposing huge tax burdens on the death of a senior who owns a family business. AARP refuses to support the permanent repeal of this unfair tax.

Mexican Totalization Agreement. The Bush Administration is promoting a Totalization Agreement with Mexico that will entitle millions of currently illegal Mexican aliens in the United States to Social Security benefits for them and their families. AARP refuses to tell Congress not to ratify this costly agreement to seniors.

Reforms in Commodity Trading to stop speculators from driving up natural gas prices. AARP refuses to endorse needed reforms to stop wild fluctuations in natural gas prices that drive up heating and cooling costs on seniors with fixed incomes, and force American farmers to pay exorbitant fees for fertilizer for their crops, further increasing food costs for seniors.

Malpractice Litigation Reforms. Trial lawyers rack up huge fees by suing doctors and hospitals for malpractice, and that forces many good doctors out of medicine because the cost of malpractice insurance has skyrocketed. That leaves fewer doctors and puts quality health care at risk for Medicare patients. AARP stands with the trial lawyers and against Medicare patients.

Double Taxation of Dividend income. Despite the fact that millions of seniors rely on dividend income for their retirement security, AARP refuses to endorse the repeal of the unfair double-taxation on dividends.

1988: AARP strongly supported the Medicare Catastrophic Health Care Act despite widespread opposition by seniors across America.

1994: AARP helps draft and strongly supports the ill-fated Hillary Clinton Socialized Medicine Plan -- despite widespread opposition from its own members.

2005: AARP proposes massive tax increases for many of its own members as a part of its Social Security Reform Plan

2005: AARP strongly supports the Dorgan Drug Importation Bill that will allow unsafe imported drugs into the U.S. from countries like Slovakia, Malta, Greece, and Latvia despite strong opposition from AARP members.

Promoting Enrollment in the new Medicare Prescription Drug Program. Under the newly passed Medicare Prescription Drug benefit, every Medicare beneficiary now has the opportunity to choose from a variety of benefit programs that best suit their health care needs. AARP is providing excellent service in assisting seniors in their understanding of the new Medicare program.

Special AARP programs. AARP provides assistance to seniors with financial planning, driving safety programs, and a Tax Help program that assists seniors with filing a proper tax return and helps them prepare budgets and manage their retirement financial needs. While these programs are funded with federal grants, AARP provides an excellent service as a contractor to the government.

AARP Hotel and travel discounts. Finally, most seniors are aware of AARP’s efforts to provide discounts on a wide array of products and services. Thanks to AARP’s offerings, seniors are saving money on everything from hotel stays, movie tickets, travel cruises, and a variety of other goods and services for seniors. This is clearly the most compelling reason seniors join AARP in order to get access to these discounts
